A2MQG Meeting Minutes - July 2024

A lot of planning went on for the upcoming A2MQG Quilt Show at the Sutherland-Wilson Farmstead in Ann Arbor (see featured post for dates and more info).

  • Show location:  Sutherland-Wilson Farmstead, 797 W. Textile Rd, Ann Arbor (near State St)
  • Dates and times:  August 18, September 15, October 20 - 2:00-5:00pm
  • Additional speaker on September 15th, Barb Kilbourn, 1:00-2:00pm
Charity and Outreach
  • MQG Community Outreach Quilt:   It's that time of the year again. The theme is "Lines and Bars" (see the MQG website for details > https://quiltcon.com/community-outreach-challenge/). We will be using the concept shared by Wendy at the last meeting.
  • Duckadilly fabric donation - Duckadilly in A2 has graciously offered us some fabric with minor defects for us to use for charity quilts. More to come on that!

Round Robin - the team shared their current RR's.  Jump in any time!

Programs - We have some great programs planned for 2024 so get your sew-jo on and be ready to participate.

  • Sew Together Bag group sew (October 12th - 10am - Plymouth Library)
  • This is like a sew-in where everyone works on the same pattern/project without having an actual teacher.  The last time there were some who had never made one and others who were on there umpteenth multple.  But this is a great opportunity to get and give input on what can be a bit tricky project.
  • You will need to purchase the pattern if you don't have it already.
  • "Next Level Quiltingwith Christina Camelli. November 9. This will be a Zoom class.  "For intermediate quilters. Learn practical skills that advanced quilters use without realizing they're using them! Integrating these tricks will help you, whatever level you are." Signup will starting shortly.
Swaps and Challenges:
  • Color Palette Challenge - Not due this meeting, but the August meeting
  • The smalls swap originally planned for August has been moved to be part of our December notions swap
  • Swap with Detroit guild is on hold for now so will most likely not happen for September

Skill Share:
  • No share this month but we are accepting sign-ups. Cheryl M will demo Y Seams at the August meeting and Carol will be demoing bojagi seaming at the September meeting. Let us know if there is something you would like to share.

  • Starting in August we will also be starting up Member Spotlights again.  Amy S. will be our member spotlight for August.
  • What is a member spotlight?  Basically you bring no more than 3 quilts that you have made and share your quilt story and a bit about you so we can get to know you. We will have some helpful questions (e.g., "When did you start quilting?", "What is the thing you like the most about the quilt process?", etc.).
Library:
  • I am in the process of weeding the library collection. Each meeting I will be bringing a few of the books that members may keep.  Any leftovers will be donated to a local library for their Friends' sales.  This will then give Heidi a much smaller collection to share and loan to members.

Maker Works Classes:
  • Sewing Machine Maintenance class - August 11, 11:30am-3:30, $40
  • Learn to maintain your sewing machine by cleaning and oiling and troubleshooting minor problems. Class will be hands-on, attendees should bring a working sewing machine and everything needed to run it (power cord, bobbin, etc). This will be of most value to owners of mechanical machines, but computerized machines are welcome. No sergers at this time. This class is offered by Barbara Keys of Sewing Crazy, a traveling sewing machine repair and maintenance business!
Miscellanous:
  • Mettler thread will be donating 3 sample spools of a new thread line for us to use as a prize offering for one of our challenges
  • Tracy Clement from Australian Catholic Univ is looking for volunteers to fill out a survey on temperature quilts.  Let me know if you are interested and want me to resend the email
  • Reminder that Elections will be here before you know it.  We know that we will have at least one person who will have term-limited-out so if you have interest in being on the board, let us know.

Show and Shares:
  • Lot of quilt-y goodness and a couple of class shares.  Photos to come!
