Weekly Round-up for 12/28/14

Meeting Minutes - December 17, 2014

We had a very nice meeting at Pink Castle this week! 

Thanks to everyone who brought delicious cookies!

Next Meeting: January 28 at 6:30pm.  Location will be announced.  This will be our annual meeting where we review the by-laws and vote on board members.  We will discuss goals for the next year and also look at pretty quilts.

Third Thursday Sewing Night: Pink Castle Fabrics on January 15 at 5pm.  Space for 10, register at Pink Castle.

Old Business:
  • Winter Retreat:  The next A2MQG retreat is scheduled for Thursday, January 29 thru Sunday, February 1 at Grindley Lodge at the Howell Nature Center in Howell, MI.  ( 
    • Please contact Ginia if you would like to attend ASAP.  We need a final headcount before the new year. 
    • Please let Ginia know if you have any dietary restrictions. 
  • Elections: We will be voting on our board members at the January Annual Meeting.  If you are interested in running for a position, please make sure you tell Brenda.  
    • We will address Committee Chair positions at the February Meeting. 
  • Quilt Con: If you are attending and have not been receiving the emails from Jenna, please let her know.  We are all sharing our hotel and flight information so we can keep tabs on each other.
  • Future Meeting Locations: Emily asked her church (Calvary United Methodist) if we could meet in their basement.  They said we could on all our usual days for $50 a meeting.  This seems to be a good option and Brenda will do a site-visit soon. 
  • Crayon Challenge: Jenna will be sending an email from Survey Monkey shortly.  The winner will be announced at the January Meeting.

New Business:
  • New Challenge: The group voted and approved a new challenge!  All of the details have been emailed to our guild members. 
  • Quilts Inc. Show:
    The International Quilt Festival /Chicago plans to showcase Modern Quilt group works from the midwest area. Quilters must be from Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Missouri, Iowa, Wisconsin, and Michigan. The exhibit will be one of the highlights at the International Quilt Festival in Chicago in March 26 – 28, 2015. 

  • AQS Grand Rapids Show:  The deadline for entries is March 27, 2015.  More information can be found HERE and HERE. 
    • We should take a Party Bus to this show.
Member Spotlight: We learned a lot about Haley and will learn about Rebecca Craft at our February Meeting. 

Skill School: Vikki showed us an AMAZING demonstration of how her embroidery machine can make a pouch all in the hoop!  It was really cool.

Round Robin and Show and Share were excellent as always.

Meeting on Wednesday

Hello members,
On Wednesday we have a meeting at 6:30pm at the NEW pink castle fabrics location.
If you participated in the Crayon Challenge, please bring your quilt and a fat quarter or a modern quilting cotton.  Bonus points if it is in the color of your crayon!   We will take pictures of the entered quilts and our members will pick a Guild's Choice winner via email.  Winner gets the stack of fat quarters!

I made a grayscale mini for one of my color theory homework assignments. The creative part straight line, part free motion quilting was an act of sheer desperation!

The fact that it was finished in time for Sew Solid Sunday was just coincidence!

Winter Retreat 2015

Hi Everyone;

The next A2MQG retreat is scheduled for Thursday, January 29 thru Sunday, February 1 at Grindley Lodge at the Howell Nature Center in Howell, MI.  ( The cost is $143 per person.  This price includes lodging and all your meals for the weekend.

Your $50 deposit is due at the October guild meeting.   Make your checks out to the Ann Arbor Modern Quilt Guild.  If you prefer to pay by Pay Pal send an e-mail to our treasurer, Jen Bernstein, and she will send you a Pay Pal invoice.  You can also mail a check to Jen.  Send me an e-mail to get her mailing address.

Remember, there is a minimum of 20 people in order to confirm the reservation.  So, send in your deposit as soon as possible.

She may be stressing over the free motion quilting, but from here it looks great!

Lynn has made many string pieced melon blocks:

and has a few fish panels she's considering making into one quilt or two.

And I made some pants for my kid.
