A2MQG Meeting Minutes, February 2021

The Guild is now meeting via Zoom. If you are not receiving Zoom meeting invites as a member, or if you would like to become a member, please contact the Board. Note that guests may attend one free meeting, plus additional meetings for a fee. Contact us for more information.

  • Social Media: We have updated our public facing FaceBook page to reflect our Zoom meeting status. In addition, we have added posts on the recent charity quilts (our "wonky log cabin" block work and the QuiltCon Community Outreach quilt project).
    • Group discussion included some suggestions to post events in the Online Observer.
    • Publicity might help with some of our Diversity outreach goals.
  • Membership:
    • We've had 3 new members join these last couple of months.
    • Current members have been sent a link to fill out a form for a membership directory and to update our records. Let the board know if you haven't received the link.
  • Programs:
    • Registration is open for Daisy Achenhoug's class https://warmfolk.com - "Basic Curves: Traditional and Curvy", April 17, 9am-2pm via Zoom. [This workshop offers an easy introduction to curved piecing. Each participant chooses a traditional block and sketches out a new block that substitutes quarter circle squares for half square triangles. We'll talk about design principles, quilt math, and explore secondary patterns. The class will cover strategies for selecting fabric, instructions for sewing curves with three different basting methods, and many tips for cutting and pressing that help your curves look amazing.].  We currently have 17 members signed up.  Class size is 20 so we will probably be opening to outside members this month. Cost is $40 for members, $55 for non-members.
    • Dorie ran a survey for attendees on which might be preferred program ideas which she will be using to help plan future programs [results in order: visible mending, free motion quilting on a domestic machine, applique].
  • Diversity Equity Inclusion Statement: a committee has been formed (Brenda RG, Ida, Amy H., Henya, Deb S.).  Brenda will be setting up a Zoom meeting to discuss further.
  • Swaps and Challenges:
    • This months challenge was a UFO challenge, there were 3 'finishers' but lots of people at least attempted work on some sort of unfinished project.
      • Kathy shared an (almost)-finish which was the Kathryn Kerr 365 Challenge Quilt - Block-of-the-Day.  This challenge is run every year by Kathryn, it is free, you sign up and then download a block a day, the idea being at the end of the year you have a completed medallion-style sampler quilt.
    • The next SWAP will be a pincushion swap.  This will be due in May and Maggie will notify members and assign swap partners.
  • Group Discussion: There was a lot of great sharing on "Who attended QuiltCon and what classes or lectures did you attend?"
  • Library sharingInspiring Improv, Nicolas Ball ; Complete Guide to Stabilizing, Deborah Wirsu ; Art Quilt Maps, Valerie Goodwin.
  • Charity Quilts:
    • Keep working on Wonky Log Cabins (see Facebook page or emails for details).
    • March 9th Tuesday Zoom Sew-In will be dedicated to working on charity blocks (although you don't need to work on those to attend).

Next meeting: Wednesday, March 31st
